Today we focused on the culture of memory that can be found within walking distance of our hotel – i.e., the heart of Berlin. We explored Alexanderplatz, the Rosenstraβe Protest, Museum Island and the Berliner Dom, Bebelplatz, the Topography of Terror Museum, the Aktion T-4 Memorial, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and several other culturally relevant sites.
It was a long day with a lot of walking, but we experienced so much. And, there was just enough time for some individual exploring at the end…pics below will capture some of that.
Tomorrow we will again focus on Berlin – this time being guided by a local Berliner, Christian Marx. We will see some aspects of the culture of memory that are found in and around his neighborhood in West Berlin. It promises to be an interesting day, and a new experience for me.
Speaking of new experiences, I was able to connect with a new friend, Daniel Rattke – a physician and medical school instructor who I met as a result of my interest in the Nazi medical training establishment, Alt Rehse. He and others are working to create a more established memorial and information center for this very important chapter in the larger National Socialist agenda. I look forward to developing this relationship.
Short and sweet post today… Thanks for following along! Below are some pics from our activities.
